Mary S. Dooley was born on April 1, 1917, at the family farm in Republic County
Kansas to Sylvia and C.E. Sherwood. She passed away on March 20, 2015 in
Glendale, AZ. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, 3 brothers, 1
sister, her husband Floyd and her daughter-in-law, Carolyn Dooley. She is
survived by sons Tom Dooley of Hutchinson, Kansas, Bob and Joyce Dooley of Ajo,
AZ, by grandchildren Mark Dooley (Hedy) of Bellingham, WA, Scott Dooley (Lisa)
of Springfield, OH; by Sherry Jones of Las Vegas, NV, by Shannon Arnett
(Abraham) of Flagstaff, AZ and by R. Spencer Dooley of Los Angeles, CA. She is also
survived by 5 great grandchildren: Katrina, Owen, Miles and Joaquim Dooley and
Zoe Arnett. She married Floyd Dooley in May 1941, and was a working partner
with him and their sons on family farms in rural Kansas until 1960. She moved
to Phoenix, Arizona in 1962. She attended a rural one room school, graduating
from high school with Normal Training Certification. She commenced teaching in
one room schools at the age of 17. While teaching in rural Kansas, Mary
attended Kansas State University. She received her B.A. in elementary education
from Grand Canyon College and her M.A. from Arizona State University. Her
career in education began again in 1964 when she commenced teaching at
Cartwright School in west Phoenix. Her career concluded with her retirement at
age 69 from Starlight Park School in the Cartwright District in December 1986.
Mary was a staunch supporter of literacy and public education her entire life
and supported her family members' pursuit of education. She celebrated her
sons' and grandchildren's success with much pride. In lieu of flowers the
family is asking that donations be made in Mary S. Dooley's name to the
Hutchinson Public Library, Memorial Dept. 901 N. Main St. Hutchinson, KS 67501,
or to the Ajo School Library P.O. Box 68, Ajo, AZ 85321. Mary remained active in
her church and physically active in her Glendale, AZ neighborhood until her
health began to deteriorate in the summer of 2009. While her departure from
this life was a natural part of life, her absence will leave a combination of
loneliness and sorrow for her family and loved ones. A graveside service will
be held on Saturday, March 28, 11:30 a.m., at Resthaven Cemetery in Glendale.
